The Circular Komovi Route
Three of Montenegro's most photogenic peaks, a perfect mix of forest trails and limestone rock crawls, all in a single 48 km loop.
The Komovi massif sits in eastern Montenegro between Andrijevica and Kolašin. Three peaks dominate: Kom Vasojevićki (2,461 m), Kom Kučački (2,487 m), and the smaller Lještanski Kom. The circular route hits the saddle between all three, with two lookout detours that add maybe 30 minutes each.
The route
Start in Andrijevica. Take the paved road towards Štavna (8 km, sealed). At the Štavna katun, turn right onto the gravel forestry road. The road climbs to the Carine saddle (1,950 m), drops into the Šekular valley, and rejoins the asphalt at Trepča. Total 48 km, 3.5 hours, no significant exposure.
Two recommended detours
- check_circleVasojevićki Kom summit hike: from the Carine saddle, a 90-minute marked walk to the top of the most popular Komovi peak.
- check_circleEko-katun Štavna: working cheese-makers' settlement at 1,800 m. Stop for žućenica salad and rakija.
Vehicle requirements
All-wheel drive recommended but not strictly required — the route is doable in a 2WD crossover during dry summer conditions. Avoid after sustained rain. Any of our SUV-category vehicles (Duster, RAV4, Renegade) will handle it comfortably.
When to go
June through September. The katuni are operational from late May to early October. Snow blocks the saddle from November onwards and well into May.
Pair this route with a night in Andrijevica or Plav — both have small family-run hotels under €60/night, and you're well-placed to tackle the Prokletije route the next morning.
